Privacy, plainly.

This policy explains what MakiRoll processes across our website and apps, which providers help us, and the choices you have. MakiRoll is made by FjordKit Digital.

The short version

MakiRoll is local-first. Raw interview video and finished exports are not uploaded to MakiRoll’s servers. We do not sell personal information or use it for third-party advertising.

We process account and project information to run the service. Payment providers handle payment details. If you arrive through an affiliate link, Creem may use a referral identifier or cookie to attribute an eligible web purchase.

Information we process

Account and profile information

Depending on the app and sign-in method you use, we process an account identifier, email address, and limited profile information supplied by your authentication provider. A native app may begin with an anonymous or platform-linked identifier and later be linked to your account.

Recordings and project information

MakiRoll processes the topic you type or dictate, interview settings, transcript text and word timings, suggested takes, your selected sequence, project status, and related workspace metadata. This information can sync to your account, but it is not the raw video file.

On iPhone, the camera records to a local file and the finished cut is saved to Photos only when you export. If private iCloud backup is enabled, MakiRoll can copy the raw interview and latest finished cut to your private iCloud. On the web, media stays in the local folder or Google Drive workspace you select. Deleting a project removes it from MakiRoll and, where supported, its app-managed backup or workspace location.

To transcribe an interview, choose the next question, and find takes, short-lived audio or transcript text may be sent to speech and language providers for that job. MakiRoll does not send those providers your finished video.

Usage, device, and support information

We process product events such as an interview starting or an export completing, along with an account or pseudonymous identifier, device and browser type, app version, referring URL, diagnostic information, and crash or performance data. We use this to operate, secure, and improve MakiRoll—not for advertising.

If you contact us or submit optional feedback, we process your message, contact details, rating, and any content you choose to include.

Purchase and entitlement information

New web purchases are processed by Creem as Merchant of Record. Existing web subscriptions may continue through Stripe. Purchases in a mobile app are processed by Apple or Google, with RevenueCat helping us determine whether paid access is active. These providers may send us a customer or transaction identifier, product, subscription status, purchase and renewal dates, and refund or dispute status. MakiRoll does not receive your full card number.

Affiliate attribution

When you follow a Creem affiliate link, Creem may process the referral URL, an affiliate identifier, an opaque signed attribution token, cookie or similar browser data, click and conversion timestamps, and purchase information. This lets Creem attribute eligible web purchases and calculate commissions. MakiRoll may receive affiliate performance, commission, and transaction reports. Affiliate tracking does not change the price you pay.

How we use information

We process information to:

Provide MakiRoll, including account sync, interviews, transcription, take-finding, export, and paid access.
Process purchases, maintain entitlements, prevent fraud, and support billing and refunds.
Attribute affiliate referrals and administer the affiliate program.
Keep the service secure and available, prevent abuse, troubleshoot failures, and improve the product.
Respond to support requests, comply with law, and enforce our terms.

Cookies and local storage

Our website and web app may use cookies or similar local storage for sign-in, security, preferences, service operation, and analytics. Creem may set or read an affiliate attribution cookie after you follow a referral link. Where consent is required, we will ask before using non-essential technologies. You can limit cookies in your browser, although sign-in, checkout, or referral attribution may then not work as intended.

Face data and video

MakiRoll records ordinary video but does not perform facial recognition, extract facial geometry, or create biometric identifiers. Raw interview video and finished cuts are not uploaded to MakiRoll’s servers or shared with our AI providers. Video stays on your device or in the local or cloud workspace you choose until you delete it under that service’s controls.

Providers we rely on

We share only what is reasonably needed with providers that help us operate MakiRoll, including:

Supabase for authentication, account data, database, and backend functions.
Vercel for website and web app hosting and operational logs, and PostHog for product analytics.
Creem for new web checkout, tax, invoicing, subscription management, refunds, fraud prevention, and affiliate attribution. Creem acts as Merchant of Record for those purchases. Read the Creem Privacy Policy.
Stripe for eligible existing web subscriptions that remain on the legacy billing system.
Apple and Google for app distribution and in-app purchases, and RevenueCat for purchase entitlement management.
Google Drive and Apple iCloud when you choose those storage options.
Speech, transcription, and language-model providers for the specific job of transcribing answers, generating the next question, or finding takes.

Legal bases, retention, and transfers

Where data-protection law requires a legal basis, we rely on performing our contract with you, our legitimate interests in running and improving a secure service, compliance with legal obligations, and consent where required. You may withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier processing.

We keep account and project metadata while your account is active and as needed to provide the service. We keep billing, tax, fraud, and legal records for the period required by law or needed to resolve disputes. Analytics and diagnostic data is retained according to provider settings and then deleted or aggregated. Backups may take a limited additional period to expire.

Our providers may process information outside your country. Where required, we and our providers use recognized safeguards for international transfers, such as adequacy decisions or standard contractual clauses.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards, including encryption in transit and provider-supported encryption at rest. No internet service can guarantee absolute security, so protect your sign-in credentials and contact us if you believe your account has been compromised.

Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

Access, correct, delete, or receive a portable copy of personal information we hold about you.
Object to or restrict certain processing and withdraw consent where processing depends on consent.
Delete projects, change app permissions, and turn off optional iCloud backup in the relevant app or device settings.
Manage analytics and cookies through available consent controls and browser settings.
Manage or cancel purchases through the provider that billed you. See our Payment Terms.
Complain to your local data-protection authority.

Children's privacy

MakiRoll is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us.

Changes and contact

We may update this policy as MakiRoll or the law changes. We will post the current version here and update the date above; for material changes, we will provide additional notice where required.
