MakiRoll

Privacy, plainly.

MakiRoll is an iPhone app that interviews you on camera, finds your strongest takes, and exports a video you approve. This page explains what stays on your phone, what we process to run the product, and what we do not do.

01

Introduction

This policy applies to MakiRoll on web, iOS, Android, and makiroll.app. MakiRoll is made by FjordKit Digital.

We believe in transparency and keeping things simple. We collect only what we need to make MakiRoll work for you.

02

The short version

Your interview video stays on your iPhone unless you keep iCloud backup on. We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your data for tracking ads. You can delete a project in the app and revoke camera, microphone, speech recognition, and Photos access in iOS Settings.

03

Information we collect

  • Account identifier: an anonymous user ID, used to sign you in and attach purchases.
  • User content: topic, transcript, take titles, and any optional written feedback you send.
  • Purchases: whether a paid plan or founder access is active, so paid features can be unlocked. Billing is handled by Apple.
  • Product interaction: privacy-safe events such as interview started or export completed, so we can see if the product works.
  • Crash and performance data: to fix failures. Crash reports are not linked to your identity in the App Store privacy nutrition label.

Your recordings

The front camera records the interview to a file on this iPhone. The finished cut is rendered on the device and saved to Photos when you export. Raw interview video and finished exports are not uploaded to MakiRoll’s servers.

If iCloud is available and backup is on (the default), MakiRoll can copy the raw interview and the latest finished cut into your private iCloud so the videos can be restored after you delete and reinstall the app. That copy lives in your Apple ID’s iCloud, not on FjordKit servers. Turn the in-app iCloud toggle off, or disable iCloud for MakiRoll in iOS Settings, to stop new backups. Deleting a project in MakiRoll also deletes that iCloud copy.

If the network drops while you are recording, MakiRoll keeps writing the local file. Live questions may pause. The take is not deleted because transcription or the interviewer is unavailable.

What we process to run the app

To interview you and find takes, MakiRoll uses the topic you type or dictate, speech from the interview (transcribed on device when possible, or sent to our speech and language providers as short-lived audio or text for that job), and the take list you approve.

When you are signed in (MakiRoll starts with an anonymous account), project metadata can sync so your library stays consistent: topic, status, interview settings, transcript text and word timings, suggested takes, and the sequence you chose. That metadata is not the video file.

Usage analytics

We use privacy-friendly analytics to understand how people use MakiRoll — events such as interview started or export completed — so we can see whether the product works and people actually finish videos. We do not track individual users for advertising.

Purchase information

Purchases are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not have access to your payment details. RevenueCat tells MakiRoll whether a paid plan or founder access is active, so new videos can be created beyond the free allowance and exports can be watermark-free.

04

Face data

MakiRoll records you on camera, but it does not collect, store, or retain any face data in the biometric sense: no facial recognition, no facial geometry extraction, and no biometric identifiers are produced from your video at any point.

What face data does the app collect?

None. MakiRoll records ordinary video of you with the front camera, but it does not use facial recognition technology and does not extract or store biometric identifiers or facial geometry data from your recordings.

How is face data used?

It is not. Your video is used solely to build the video you approve. No facial features are analyzed, extracted, or used for identification, authentication, or profiling.

Is face data shared with third parties?

No. Your raw interview video and finished cuts are never uploaded to MakiRoll’s servers or shared with third parties. Only speech from the interview — as short-lived audio or transcript text — is sent to our speech and language providers to transcribe your answers, choose the next question, and find takes. No biometric or facial recognition data is extracted, stored, or shared by MakiRoll or these providers.

Where is face data stored?

Nowhere. Your video files live on your iPhone, and optionally in your private iCloud if backup is on. They never touch FjordKit servers.

How long is face data retained?

There is no retention period for face data because none is ever collected. Your video files remain on your device (and your iCloud, if enabled) until you delete the project.

05

How we use your information

We use your information to:

  • Provide MakiRoll: interview you, transcribe answers, find takes, and export your video.
  • Keep AI features available and prevent abuse.
  • Improve and optimize the app experience and fix bugs and technical issues.
  • Respond to your support requests.

06

Data storage & security

Recording is local-first: the interview file and finished cut stay on your iPhone, and the finished video is saved to Photos only when you export it. Project metadata that syncs to your account is protected with industry-standard security measures, including encryption in transit and at rest.

We do not sell personal information, and we do not use your information for third-party advertising.

07

Permissions on iPhone

MakiRoll only asks for what the interview needs.

  • Camera — records you while Maki asks questions and builds your video.
  • Microphone — records and transcribes your answers.
  • Speech recognition — optional on-device help for your topic and the interview.
  • Photos — saves the finished video when you export. MakiRoll does not browse your library.

08

Optional feedback

After takes are ready, you may rate how useful they were and leave a short note. Sharing the transcript and rating for private beta evaluation is off unless you turn it on. That opt-in is only used to improve MakiRoll, not to train public models on your face or voice file.

09

Third-party services

MakiRoll uses the following third-party services:

  • Apple App Store — app distribution, in-app purchases, and subscription management.
  • RevenueCat — tells MakiRoll whether a paid plan or founder access is active.
  • Speech and language providers — process only what is needed to transcribe your answers, choose the next question, or find takes. They do not keep a copy of your finished video.

10

Your rights & choices

You have the right to:

  • Delete a project in the app to remove it from your library and from iCloud backup.
  • Turn off “Back up videos to iCloud” in MakiRoll Settings to stop new copies.
  • Manage camera, microphone, speech recognition, Photos, and iCloud access in iOS Settings.
  • Restore or manage purchases in MakiRoll Settings or your Apple ID subscriptions.
  • Request information about what data we have about you, or request its deletion, by emailing us.

11

Children's privacy

MakiRoll is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.

12

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the “Last updated” date.
